David Laird


Higher education and government policies make strange bedfellows. No one knows this better than David. Gaining increasing expertise over the past 35 years, he has become a national expert on higher education financing and public policy. Clients who need counsel on navigating this often confusing world have the perfect guide in David.

Never one who to be distracted by multiple duties, David served as the president and CEO of the Minnesota Private College Council, an association of 17 private liberal arts colleges and universities. He was also in charge of these affiliated organizations: the Minnesota Private College Fund, the nation’s fifth largest statewide private college fund raising organization; the Minnesota Private College Research Foundation, the center of private higher education research in the state; and Partners for Education Opportunity, an organization dedicated to assisting students and their families finance quality higher education.

Prior to joining the council in 1988, David held multiple posts in higher education and finance. David holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in government and history and Masters of Education in education and history from St. Lawrence University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He holds an Honorary Doctor of Law degree from Concordia College – Moorhead.

David serves on the board of directors of the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center and St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He is presently the president of Templeton Laird, an international higher education consulting group. He was the founding chair of the board of College Possible. David is special advisor to the Hong Kong International Education Development Foundation, as well as a member of the St. Paul-Minneapolis Committee on Foreign Relations, the Concord Coalition, Nature Conservancy and the Rotary Club of St. Paul.

David is a member of the Mouldy Figs Jazz Band.
